Austique’s 2012 Ski Guide: Courchevel 1850

At Austique HQ, the post Christmas lull is giving way to pre-ski-season excitement. It’s that time of year when the Austique girls zip off to the slopes in search of Alpine adventure, fresh powder and a healthy dose of medicinal vin chaud to keep away the cold.

How not to do it

The Austique girls expect a little luxury to go hand in hand (or should that be mitten in mitten?) with our adrenaline sports, and where better to start than Courchevel 1850?! Home to some of the Alps’ most exciting skiing, along with more glamorous people per square inch than anywhere else in the world, slope-side art installations, an altiport (that’s an airport at alitutude to you and me), chic apres venues, it’s very own diamond shop and a motoryacht in the town square (!),  this is the only place to be seen this season.

You’ll forget all about the bruises on your shins and frostbite on the end of your nose when you’re dancing the evening away at La Folie Douce, the 3 Valley’s most hedonistic answer to apres. With your feet firmly back on terra firma, you can party to your heart’s content with spectacular views and a very cosmopolitan crowd, whilst enjoying the finest champagne the mountains have to offer (which in a resort with it’s own helipad, is pretty fine indeed!).

Now, we wouldn’t want to send you to such a glamorous fashion destination, without a little  advice. The sartorial ins and outs of the slopes can be a minefield: to fur or not to fur? goggles or glasses? hat, headband or helmet? thermals …. really???? In a resort that boasts it’s own GRAFF, Valentino and Chanel, you’ll certainly need a guiding hand! The jet-set clientele here aren’t shy of a little slopeside competitive dressing, but if you stick with our carefully edited apres-ski chalet collection you can’t go wrong!

And if all these gorgeous goodies haven’t got you in the mood to head off for the slopes, check out Courchevel’s answer to the dreamy Bear Grylls (in duplicate!).  The devilishly handsome Kenny brothers will guide you through the mountains, in some considerable style (and with a little help on the ski carrying front if you play your cards right). They will whisk you away from it all, to the most inaccessible, breathtakingly beautiful, secret locations, and return you to safety in plenty of time to soak up the hours of apres on offer down in the village. We expect that once word gets out, this dynamic duo will be in hot demand, so get your skates on ladies and form an orderly line!!

Buyer’s Guide to Paris: Day One

Paris Tranoi

Paris Tranoi

Fresh back from New York, ever so slightly jet-lagged it was time for the Austique buying and wholesale team to head off to Paris to see the brands we hadn’t caught up with in the States. Two days of appointments, showrooms and tradeshows, celebrity spottings galore and several delicious entrecotes down and we could hang up our boots for the SS12 selling season.

The trip started with a hint of the glamour of the week to come,  as we were transfixed by Alexa Chung’s beauty at the next table on the Eurostar and eavesdropped on Alexander McQueen’s wholesale team in the row behind. We gleefully noted the chaos of even such an established brand as they carted thousands of pounds worth of dresses around in dogeared carrier bags. By comparisson we were feeling rather professional!

The showroom suite was twice the size of our flats in London and once assembled the collection looked seriously glamorous. Job done,  it was time for me to head off to the trade shows of Tranoi and Premiere Class to catch up with some new labels and old favourites: Goldsign,  Syndey Evan, Irwin and Jordan, Angel Jackson and Van Rycke to name just a few.  Check out my favourite picks from the day below:

Buyer’s Guide to Paris: Day Two (My kingdom for a taxi! )

Day Two in Paris saw a marathon of back to back appointments. They say it’s better to be late than not to arrive at all; and that’s just as well, as in Gai Paris, punctuality is impossible! Winding in and out of the teeny streets of Le Marais, literally running between appointments, I would – as they say- have given my kingdom for a taxi. Although a horse would probably have been easier to find!

Getting out to meet suppliers and see the collections is the best part of a buyer’s job and so appointments are always such a treat! In New York and London the fleet of taxis on hand to rescue a damsel in a dress are a real godsend, ensuring the smooth running of the day and a unflustered passage from one glamorous showroom to the next. Negotiating Paris’ cobbled streets in 4″ heels is NOT an experience to be repeated and next year I am seriously considering wearing my running shoes. I made all my appointments by the skin of my teeth, although slightly pinker in the cheeks than the cool, sophisticated Parisians awaiting me at the showrooms.

Markus Lupfer SS12

Markus Lupfer SS12

The day began at Markus Lupfer, where sequinned knits sat side by side with delicate, french lace skirts and breton striped dresses. The stand out piece for me had to be the sequinned shark jumper – definitely one for the personal order file!!

Sophie Hulme and the Palais de la Bourse (Tranoi)

Sophie Hulme and the Palais de la Bourse (Tranoi)

Next Stop: Sophie Hulme, a new label for us and one we’re sure you’re going to love. This sophisticated London designer began her career with an accessories line and has now branched out into a capsule collection of silk shirts and dresses and some very chic leather and linen paneled jackets. You may have seen her bag installation in Selfridges this season – imagine sleek silhouettes in buttery soft leathers with subtle gold hardware. Love!!

Then back to our suite to meet with the beautiful Jana from Twoscoops who had brought the adorable ‘By Sophie’ all the way from Dubai to see me. Made from sparkling Swarovski crystals, this Eastern inspired jewellery label is a fun (and affordable) collection that literally flies out of Dubai’s most exclusive boutiques. And the great news is that we’ll be receiving our first drop of delicate Swarovski crystal pieces into the store in time for Christmas – make sure to tell Father Christmas!

Lily with the SS12 collection

Lily with the SS12 collection

After several less fruitful meetings spread across just about every Parisian district, my final and most important appointment of the day was with the wonderfully glamorous Lily Fortescue, Austique’s wholesale representative and resident party girl. Whilst I have seen our SS12 collection in production I was yet to see it all together, looking quite so fabulous, in such grand surroundings. Heavily embellished pieces sat side by side with light flowing silks and bold prints to make this Austique’s finest collection to date. This feels like a substantial, quality collection that can certainly hold its own against even the most established brands I’ve seen for SS12.

Naturally, I placed my largest order of the season. Can’t wait to see it in store!!

A buyer’s guide to New York: Part 3

“Asprin, Asprin, Asprin, where’s the f*****g Asprin????!”

So began day two at coterie.

After yet more coffees and delicious pastries, day two began in earnest. Having seen our existing suppliers on Monday, this was our chance to search out some fresh talent to add some spice to the existing Austique rollcall. The pressure was on!

First up was our meeting at Raoul, with the lovely Victoria Hood. Elegant silhouettes, fabulous detailing and bright colours made this a classic case of love at first sight for both of us. If the rest of the day continued like this, it was possible we might even forget our pounding heads, as we got swept up in the excitement of the beautiful collections on show.

Next up was a trip to Monrow T Shirts and Love Quotes Scarves, which drew us like children to a candy shop. We were overwhelmed with the choice of pop coloured tees and scarves. Too hard to resist! Just like the skittles we’d been munching on the Austique stand to combat our low blood sugar levels…

Then on to Yosi Samra’s cute elasticated pumps, which will be coming in time for Christmas 2011. These clever leather ballet pumps come in a rainbow of colours and have nifty split soles so can fold up and fit in your handbag on a night out.  So say good by to the high-heel hobble home.

Finally, on to Gorjana, our favourite online jewellery label to see what they had to update their cute collection. We loved these  brightly coloured hair ties which come in a pack of 3 and are sure to become best-sellers come Christmas time.

We saw so many incredible new brands on our 2nd day that we can’t possibly list them all here (and it would be giving away all our secrets…) but after another long and productive day, we left the Javits Centre satisfied, exhausted and ready to hit the hotel gym for some r ‘n’ r.

A buyer’s guide to New York : Part 1

I-heart-New-York

Twice a year the buyers from Austique head over the pond to the Big Apple , to source many of the beautiful labels that you all know and love at Austique. From fashion lines Alice + Olivia, Haute Hippie, Mara Hoffman and Goldsign to great accessories from Rebecca Minkoff, Lauren Merkin and Chan Luu.

Two days of sifting through thousands of brands plus researching the coolest New York shopping haunts make the trip a serious test of endurance, but our buyers will stop at nothing to bring you the very best the fashion world has to offer.

The first day at Coterie is always the craziest. Suffering from jet-lag and bolstered by many coffees (and an entire basket of patisseries), we trot down to Jacobs Javits centre for 9am decked out in our finest to face a packed schedule of back to back appointments with our favourite brands. And as if the pressure of keeping our cool in the presence of all those head-spinningly divine dresses wasn’t enough, we also have to pretend to be nonchalant when seeing our fashion heroine: Ashley Olsen at Elizabeth and James. Swoon!

And the acid test of what’s going to do well next season?? Always the pieces we love so much we have to order them for ourselves. Here’s a sneak peak at the pieces that will be making it into our wardrobes for SS12:

Fit For A Queen…?

Fit for a queen?

Fit for a queen?

The Huffington Post’s Yvonne Yorke announced this morning that our beautiful Queen-in-waiting has chosen our long time favourite occasionwear designer, Sophie Cranston of Libelula, to design her wedding dress. After months of speculation over which high end fashion house is behind the design of Catherine Middleton’s wedding dress, Yvonne, who has claimed to know the identity of the true designer all along, spilled the beans over the weekend.

At Austique, we think that trying to guess the designer of Catherine’s wedding dress will spoil the surprise on the big day (which we just can’t wait for!) and respect the bride’s wishes to keep the identity of the designer secret.  But wouldn’t it be lovely to think that our future queen shared our love of Sophie Cranston and the fabulous Libelula collections!

Pictured left wearing Libelula’s elegant velvet dress coat to a friend’s wedding in January, Catherine looks absolutely stunning in Libelula’s timelessly elegant designs.
